From Jules:
Ahhh,
the LOSER card. A classic Whoser moment if there ever was one. And
it went a little something like this ...
It
all started around Christmas 1998, when I got a card in the mail from
Sarah in Vacouver. (Remember her?) I opened the cardup - and did a
double-take. "Is that GREG?" It certainly *looked* just
like him, but ... I flipped the card over. It was done by a Bay Area-based
company in 1987, so it was certainly *possible*. Then I got a call
from Nessa. She'd received the same card. (So, it turned out, did
Ashley, Dana in Paris, and several other Whosers.) I e-mailed Sarah,
asking her where the cards had come
from. Seems she'd found a box of them at a local store. Nessa and
I decided we simply *had* to ask Greg sbout the card - and get a picture
of his reaction when we showed it to him.
So,
fast-forward to January 2, 1999. Nessa, Sam, Nattie and I went to
see Greg at Cobb's Comedy Club in SF. After the show, we took photos
with him and chatted for a bit. Then it was time. "Say Greg,"
I said, innocent as can be, "A few of us got these cards in the
mail. We were wondering if you knew anything about where they came
from." Nessa readied her camera, and I procuded the card. Greg's
reaction was nothing short of priceless.

"Oh,
my god..." he stumbled back a step. Nessa supremely captured
the expression on his face. Greg said he'd sold his soul when he posed
for that card. (Aside: Debi Durst was there thst night, and she said
she and her husband received that card from Greg every Christmas for
years.) Anyway, of course I asked Greg to sign the card, which he
did, including the now-infamous "LOSER" commentary on the
photo. And that's the story. :-)
